Kwun Tong District is an area in eastern Kowloon, Hong Kong, with a long history and significant development potential. It encompasses Kwun Tong Town Center, Ngau Tau Kok, Kowloon Bay, Yau Tong, and other areas. Developed through land reclamation projects in the 1950s, it has since become one of Hong Kong’s major industrial districts. This transformation continues to this day, and Kwun Tong has become a major commercial hub in East Kowloon. Kwun Tong District has a population of approximately 673,000 (2021 census data), making it the most densely populated district in Hong Kong. According to a report by the Hong Kong Planning Department, Kwun Tong also has a large working population, reaching 320,000 in 2024, with 30% of them employed in import/export trade, wholesale, and retail sectors. Kwun Tong’s future development centers on the “Kwun Tong Town Centre Redevelopment Project,” the largest urban renewal project in Hong Kong’s history. Planned in five phases, the project covers residential, hotel, commercial, leisure, and transportation facilities in the Yue Man Square area of Kwun Tong. The total site area exceeds 2 million square feet. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has also announced plans to establish teaching and research facilities at Kwun Tong City Centre 2.0, aligning with the district’s strategic positioning as Hong Kong’s second core business district, which underscores Kwun Tong’s immense future development potential.
