Sha Tin District is located in the eastern New Territories of Hong Kong. With Shing Mun River serving as its central axis, the district extends from southwest to northeast and encompasses areas such as Sha Tin New Town, Tai Wai, Fo Tan, Siu Lek Yuen, Shek Mun, and Ma On Shan. The district boasts a blend of natural and cultural landscapes. As one of Hong Kong’s earliest new towns, it is also the most densely populated administrative district in the territory. According to the 2021 census, the district has a population of approximately 692,000, with residents primarily engaged in import-export trade or the education sector. Currently, as a mature new town, Shatin’s latest planning focuses on sustainable development and optimal land use. The government is promoting the “Northern Metropolis Strategy” to drive development in the northern New Territories (such as San Tin and Kwu Tung) and innovation and technology parks. Although Shatin is not within the core scope of this strategy, development in neighboring areas will enhance Shatin’s transportation and economic connectivity. Key projects include the relocation of the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to the Nun’s Cave at Ngau Kung Kok, expected to be completed in 2029. This will free up 28 hectares of land for the construction of housing and community facilities, with the aim of providing more public housing units to meet housing demand. Meanwhile, the entire Tuen Ma Line opened in 2021, and the East Rail Line extension to Admiralty opened in 2022, providing direct service to Hong Kong Island for the first time and further alleviating traffic congestion.
