Yuen Long District

Yuen Long.Tin Shui Wai.Hung Shui Kiu

Yuen Long District is located in the northwestern part of the New Territories in Hong Kong. It is approximately three times the size of Kowloon and 1.8 times the size of Hong Kong Island, making it the third-largest administrative district in Hong Kong. Since the 1970s, Yuen Long has gradually expanded into a new town; by the 1990s, the development of the Tin Shui Wai New Town further propelled the district’s transformation into a residential and commercial hub. As of mid-2024, the population of Yuen Long District was approximately 676,000, making it the second most populous district in Hong Kong. The district has experienced rapid development in recent years, with significant population growth; the local workforce is primarily employed in the retail and food and beverage sectors. Yuen Long is currently in an active phase of development and, due to its connectivity with Shenzhen and other parts of Hong Kong, has become a key component of the “Northern Metropolis” development strategy. Several new development projects, such as the Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area and the Yuen Long South Development Area, are underway. It is projected that by 2046, these projects will create approximately 650,000 jobs and accommodate a population of about 2.5 million. Among these, the Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area will be positioned as a hub for modern services, with plans to construct rail and road systems connecting to the Shenzhen Bay Port and Qianhai, thereby enhancing logistics and professional services through the Hong Kong–Shenzhen Western Link. As the Yuen Long South Development Area and various industrial and commercial redevelopment projects are completed, Yuen Long’s population and economic activity will continue to grow, gradually developing into a core area of the northwestern New Territories.
